Flute, Piccolo

Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, flutist Layla Roberts currently resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she teaches flute and chamber music at the University of Manitoba (U of M) Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. Layla also teaches at the U of M Preparatory Division, is on faculty at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, and maintains a private studio in St. Vital. She has previously held teaching positions at Brandon University, as well as the University of Ottawa as a graduate student. In high demand as a flute and woodwind clinician, Layla has also judged competitions in both Canada and the United States. Her students consistently win awards at the local, provincial, and national level. Layla is also a proud member of Winnipeg’s Syrinx Flute Festival Committee.

As a performer, Layla has appeared on CBC radio in recital, as orchestral soloist, and as orchestra member, and has performed extensively as soloist, chamber musician, and with various orchestras including the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with numerous chamber ensembles, and has had the honour of being involved with both Canadian and World premieres.

Layla has earned performance degrees from the University of Ottawa and Memorial University, and has also completed studies in orchestral training (flute and piccolo) at the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her primary teachers include Michelle Cheramy, Robert Cram, and Leslie Newman. She has performed at masterclasses for numerous world-renowned flutists including Emmanuel Pahud, Mary Kay Fink, Susan Hoeppner, Eyal Ein-Habar and Carol Wincenc.
