David Troya began his musical journey with his mom, and later with Angela Artugnan, Toshko Stoyanov, Celia Zaldumbide, and the pedagogue Bertha Brito. In 2002, he moved to Spain, where he performed as a chamber musician at Bilbao’s Palacio Euskalduna, one of Europe’s largest venues, in March 2003. After winning second prize at Santander’s chamber music contest, David’s duo was invited to perform at Sabadell’s Fine Arts Academy. He also collaborated with the Pablo Sarasate Symphony Orchestra.
In 2005, David moved to Italy to study with Stephen Kramer in Rome and Luca Garbini in Terni. Sponsored by the Ecuadorian Embassy, he performed a recital at Rome’s Palazzo della Santa Croce in March 2007.
In September 2007, David moved to Canada on a fellowship from Memorial University of Newfoundland, studying with pianist Timothy Steeves. He served as the accompanist for the university’s opera workshop class and, during his final year of his Master’s in Piano Performance, was a teaching assistant for the chamber music class. David gave several recitals in St. John’s and performed as a young artist at ScotiaFest in Halifax in June 2011, one of Atlantic Canada’s largest festivals. An enthusiastic piano teacher, many of his students have excelled in festivals, exams, recitals, and competitions.
In 2012, David moved to Winnipeg, completing a Diploma in Performance at the University of Manitoba in May 2014. He gave recitals at the Millennium Library in Winnipeg in October 2015 and November 2019. He has received two Professional Development grants from the Winnipeg Arts Council for overseas performances. Since 2015, he has been a pianist at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and has been teaching at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts for more than ten years.
