Children’s group music classes

There are many benefits to introducing your child to music from a young age, including the development of discipline, improved coordination, and fostering a love of music! Our children’s group music classes are a fun and engaging way to introduce your child to early musical concepts. We keep our class sizes small, allowing your child to interact with their instructor, and benefit from the friendly, supportive, close-knit group environment. Make friends, find community, try out a new instrument, and have fun making music together!

Our music school is centrally located in downtown Winnipeg, with plenty of public parking nearby, and a rapid transit bus stop across the street. Our music classes take place on the University of Winnipeg campus, in Bryce Hall–directly east of Wesley Hall (the “castle” building). Please click here for accessibility information. Please use the buzzer to access the building on weekends and after 6 pm on weekdays.

Each of our highly-qualified music instructors have a degree in music or the equivalent in performance experience. A majority hold Bachelor degrees, many possess Masters degrees and some have earned Doctorate degrees. In addition to experience and education, you can feel assured that your child will be in a safe environment, as all our faculty are required to have an up-to-date clearance by the Provincial Child Abuse Registry.

Our group music classes for kids include:

Baby Beats (ages 0-3 ) This parented group class focuses on musical foundations and social skill development. Your baby will gain fine and gross motor skills, learn how to wait their turn, discover tempo and rhythm by dancing and playing with scarves or body percussion, match pitch and find joy in musical storytelling.

Musical Storytime (ages 2-3) This parented group class explores various themes each week through singing, movement, instrument exploration and books. This hands-on class is a fun and engaging place to introduce your child to early musical concepts, build social connections, and foster a love for music.

Adventures in Music (ages 4-5) This un-parented group class uses a variety of instruments, movement songs and familiar tunes to create a fun space for connecting and making music. Your child will learn simple musical skills such as pitch matching, keeping a steady beat, and changing tempos. They’ll also collaborate and engage in a class environment while developing independence.

Introduction to Instruments (ages 4-7) Is your child ready to start private music lessons? Have they participated in early childhood music programs and are curious about what comes next? This group class will introduce your child to a different instrumental discipline each week, letting them decide what they like best as they transition into private instruction. Will it be violin? Piano? Ukulele? Voice? Try them all!

Introduction to Instruments (ages 6-9) Does your child show interest in a particular instrument such as piano? Are you seeking an opportunity for them to explore that before committing to private lessons? These four week introductory group classes focus on a single instrument in a supportive group environment. Kids will spend time playing with others, getting introduced to note reading, and making music in a small group. These affordable group classes explore musical and instrumental options in more depth to support later individual study.

Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 3-5) Does your child love to sing, dance, play dress up, and tell stories with music? Are you unsure whether they are ready to start taking music lessons? Explore four weeks of musical theatre in a small group to help determine whether your child is ready for the next step in their musical journeys with activities designed especially for busy minds and bodies who love music!
