Shauna Martin

Shauna Martin is a Winnipeg native that has recently returned to her hometown after teaching and performing in the Boston area for over a decade. Originally trained as a pianist, she also studied the oboe and voice and performed professionally in both, though her focus is now on singing. She has been fortunate to work in both musical theatre and opera, as well as straight plays. She studied voice with Nancy Hermiston and Heather Thomson-Price at UBC.

While in the Boston area, Shauna had the pleasure and privilege of working with many current Broadway artists in masterclass and performance. Shauna has had many students go on to study both musical theatre and vocal performance, but she is most proud of the enduring love of music and theatre she has helped foster in her students. In July of 2021, Shauna was certified in level 1 of Somatic Voicework™ .

What is your education and experience?

I have a Bachelor of Music from Brandon University, and a Master of Music (Opera) from the University of British Columbia.

What made you decide to study music?

I couldn’t imagine doing anything else! Singing has always been my first love, but my whole life I have played and sung in almost every kind of possible ensemble.

What makes your lessons different from the rest?

I bring a wide set of musical experiences and repertoire to meet the students where they are. Singing is a communicative art that requires not just foundational vocal technique and acting skill, but also an understanding of the styles, and I believe strongly in “cross training” the singer.

What do you love about teaching?

I love to help the student discover their passion for music and theatre! Singing gives students a chance to share emotions and expression, and develop confidence as they improve their vocal and performance skills. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how students can grow!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking music lessons?

It’s the most fun you will have while working hard!
