The leaves have started to fall, we’re reaching for our thicker jackets before going outside, and we’ve fallen back into our fall to winter routines. Learning in a group can boost creativity, give you a chance to meet new folks, save you some money, and so much more. Now that you’re settled, grab a warm beverage, and explore the group lessons we have running in the fall session at the Manitoba Convervatory of Music & Arts at the University of Winnipeg.
NOON HOUR VOCAL POINT
WEDNESDAYS: 12:15 – 1:00 pm COST: $160 | INSTRUCTOR: Martin Wilson | CLASS LENGTH: 8 Weeks
Develop your vocal technique in a comfortable environment to increase your tone, range and pitch and apply those skills to the songs you love. This class includes group instruction and one-on-one coaching sessions with a supportive and highly skilled instructor. You will be encouraged to learn more about your voice and explore any style of music you choose!

BEGINNING THE UKULELE
SUNDAYS: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm COST: $160 | INSTRUCTOR: Phil Natividad
If ever there was an instrument quickly gaining popularity with modern audiences beyond the Folk music crowd–it’s hands-down the ukulele! The Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts is excited to introduce Beginner Ukulele in our group programs roster, added by enormous popular demand! This hip and transportable instrument is perfect for anyone wanting to learn something new. Learning to play the ukulele is a great introduction into musical proficiency and literacy for first-timers. Taught by experienced ukulele instructor, Phil Natividad, students will pluck their way through the basics on the little instrument taking the musical world by storm.

INTRODUCTION TO BLUEGRASS
SATURDAYS 2:00 – 3:00 PM | CLASS LENGTH: 4 Weeks, November 2-23, 2019
COST: $90 | Instructors: Ed Byard, Jim Hildred & Zohreh Gervais
*Students may choose to register for single sessions at $30 each
Bluegrass is a toe-tappin’ and inclusive style of music for vocalists and acoustic string players. This series of workshops will introduce the form and variety of bluegrass music. Participation and fun encouraged!
Topics covered will include:
- structure of a variety of bluegrass tunes
- learning a bluegrass tune
- vocal harmony singing in bluegrass
- ensemble playing
NOTE: Instrumentalists wanting to participate should be able to play major chords on their instruments, as well as be comfortable moving from one chord position to another fluidly at a moderate tempo.
FRIDAYS: 12:00 – 12:45 pm COST: $160 | INSTRUCTOR: Jennilee Martineau | CLASS LENGTH: 8 Weeks
Explore Manitoba’s rich tradition of fiddling with renowned fiddler and teacher Jennilee Martineau. Immerse yourself in jigs, reels, old time and Scottish fiddling tunes. Don’t read music? No Problem! All tunes are taught by ear. This class is appropriate for students who have a basic knowledge of playing the violin/fiddle. If you are a beginner, we suggest you enroll for a package of private lessons with Jennilee prior to the class. This will bring your playing up to the level of the other class participants and will insure that you are have a wonderful musical experience in the class. Violin rentals are available from the instructor for an additional cost.

An MCMA favourite – this class makes the dream of how to sing well a reality for anyone. Our highly qualified instructor will work with this group to teach the basics of vocal production, diction, and breathing in a variety of musical styles. Take your singing to the next level with a mix of group and individual singing in a laid back atmosphere. Everyone can sing – help us show you how!
