Valour Rocks receives gift from Skrillex

Skrillex#!-300The Manitoba Conservatory spent some time with Skrillex while he was in Winnipeg on the FullFlex Express tour in July. Working with the Bridges for Music program, he promotes community development through music by donating electronic DJ equipment to one of the Conservatory’s outreach programs, Valour Rocks. The Valour Rocks is a drop-in program for students in the Valour Community Centre area to learn music and is facilitated by the MCMA’s Lindsey White.

Students from the Valour Rocks program, Lindsey, Ashley and MCMA summer student, Thomas, were invited to tthe concert. The night started off with a backstage tour for all of us; it was so exciting!!! Then we enjoyed the show for some time. We were lucky to listen to Kiesza, a pop singer who really gave an awesome and energetic performance. At the end of the night, Skrillex led a cool presentation about his career as a DJ, music and then gave us DJ equipment to use in our program! The main message from Skrillex was “Don’t be afraid to push your limits, always try to reach something bigger, and get involved with people that you look up to. Developing your artistic side will help you in whatever you want to achieve.”  What an experience for us to meet Skrillex, Kiesza and Mija.  “Meeting the artists was an awesome experience” noted one of the students from Valour.

Skrillex2-400The kids in the Valour Rocks program are very excited about their new DJ equipment and the MCMA is looking for an instructor to help them learn to use it quickly.  A BIG thank you to Skrillex, Kiesza, Mija and everyone from the FullFlex Express tour and Bridges for Music for this great gift and the experience of a lifetime!!!!
