Biography

Originally from Fergus, Ontario, violinist Susan McCallum moved to Winnipeg in 2001 to join the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Shortly thereafter, Susan was also granted a position in the violin section of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. As an orchestral musician, she has performed with several Canadian ensembles including the Hamilton Philharmonic and the Ottawa Symphony, as well as the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra as visiting Assistant Concertmaster. Locally, Susan has also performed with the Brandon Chamber Players and Rainbow Stage, and abroad, with the Lancashire Sinfonietta in Manchester, England. Susan holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours in Performance from McGill University, where she studied with Denise Lupien. She also holds a Master of Music in Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in England, where she was a student of renowned violinist and pedagogue Maciej Rakowski. Throughout her studies, Susan worked with many distinguished violinists, including Ivry Gitlis, Lewis Kaplan, Ani Kavafian, and Lorand Fenyves. She has attended several major music festivals, including more recently the Lake District Summer Music Festival in England and the International Summer Academy at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria. In Canada, Susan has performed at the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival in Winnipeg, the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Domaine Forget International Festival, and with the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. In addition to her engagements as a performer, Susan is also a dedicated violin teacher, and looks forward to her new role on faculty at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts this year.
