Biography
An exceptional musician with a penchant for adventurous repertoire, Sarah Kirsch has dedicated herself and her instrument to the creation and performance of music and the rejuvenation of classical style. Invited to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Music on a full tuition scholarship, she covered the roles of Cecilia in the world premiere performance of Randall Shinn’s Sara McKinnon and Fire, Princess and Nightingale in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges with the CU Opera and sang the world premiere performance of Mike Krzyzniak’s Two Songs for Coloratura Soprano in the CU Pendulum New Music Concert Series. She also took part in the school’s Vocal Jazz and West African Highlife ensembles. After a move to Victoria, she sang another world premiere performance as Jokmeam in Isaiah Bell’s Oholibah and Her Lovers and as a featured recitalist at British Columbia’s 150th Provincial Anniversary Celebrations in 2008. Since moving to Winnipeg, Sarah earned a spot among the winners of the 2009 Orville J Derraugh Memorial Scholarship, appeared as Despina in the Little Opera Company of Winnipeg’s 2009 production of Cosi fan tutte. She has premiered Winnipeg composer Michael Matthews’ chamber work Winter is when and American composer Richard Festinger’s song cycle Spring Ice, as well as appearing as Donna Francesca and the Moon in the University of Manitoba Opera Theatre School Tour’s world premiere production of Dean Burry’s Angela and her Sisters. Sarah has also performed as a soloist with Canzona and the Southern Manitoba Choral Society, and will be featured with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir and with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra in Spring of 2011. Awarded the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship, she is working towards a Master of Music Performance with the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music under the instruction of Mel Braun, Tracy Dahl and Laura Loewen.
