Biography

Violinist Phoebe Tsang was born in Hong Kong, and grew up in the UK . Besides her busy performing schedule, she believes that an engaged teaching practice is an integral part of her holistic approach to music. As a classical performer, Phoebe has served as the principal violinist for numerous orchestras such as the Toronto Philharmonia, Sinfonia Toronto, the Canadian Sinfonietta, and the Ontario Philharmonic. She has also been a featured soloist with orchestras such as the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, the Mimico Chamber Orchestra and Sinfonia Toronto. The artistic director of Alicier Arts Chamber Music, Phoebe has also worked with ensembles such as I Furiosi Baroque Ensemble, The WoodChoppers Association and Continuum Contemporary Music. She recently joined the second violin section of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Phoebe’s love of music extends beyond classical genres, to include performances and recordings of rock, pop, hip hop, jazz, tango and Celtic music. She has toured with Canadian pop duo RyanDan, and performed on stage and screen for Much Music, MTV and the CBC, with artists such as Kanye West, The Canadian Tenors, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Molly Johnson, and Emily Haines of the indie rock band Metric. Phoebe holds a Performance Diploma from the Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she was the student and teaching assistant of the late Professor Lorand Fenyves. She credits him with her love of teaching, and continues to enjoy learning from the example of her students of all ages, from beginner to advanced. In addition, Phoebe holds a BSc in Architecture, and currently combines her professional violin skills with her work as a poet and opera librettist. She has been called “”a true renaissance woman”" who believes that creativity is a state of mind that transcends boundaries of language, style and art form. The author of “”Contents of a Mermaid’s Purse”" (Tightrope Books, 2009), her poetry has been published internationally, and commissioned by orchestras including the Toronto Symphony.
