Maura was born in Toronto and moved to Prince Edward Island at the age of seven, where she began her piano studies. By the age of 16 she had been awarded 2 silver medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music and finished grade 10 piano. Having diverse interests, she also studied flute with Gerry Rutten and Hank Ykelenstam.
Maura was awarded several scholarships in both piano and flute and attended McGill Unviersity in Montreal, where she furthered her piano studies with Karl Steiner and Rose Goldblatt, and flute with Wolfgang Kander. Maura returned home to the University of PEI and continued her studies while performing concerts around the island as well as performing with the PEI Symphony.
Before joining the Manitoba Conservatory in 1990, Maura successfully operated her own private studio for 10 years and continues to enjoy preparing students of all ages (youth through adult) for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations or just exploring music through piano. Maura’s students consistently achieve above average grades in RCM exams in both piano and theory. Some of her students have gone on to pursue careers in music. Maura has been invited to adjudicate piano for private music schools in Winnipeg.
Above all, Maura’s goal is to give her students the gift of a lifetime of music appreciation.
