Theory is about music literacy. Theory classes give students the opportunity to read music, write music and understand music. Enrolling in theory class can free up time in your individual lesson to focus on skills specific to your instrument and makes learning your instrument easier! After completing this course, you will be prepared to write the Royal Conservatory of Music Level 8 Theory exam, a co-requisite for the Grade 8 RCM Piano Certificate.

Individual lessons are recommended for advanced theory. Please contact us and we’ll set up a consultation with our theory specialist, Michele Beaumont, to get you started!

New concepts include:

• alto and tenor clefs

• transposition to concert pitch; score types

• hybrid meters

• compound intervals

• triads built on any scale degree

• cluster, quartal, and polychords

• introduction to Medieval, Renaissance, and world music
